Applications of Rhetoric in Technical Communications:

The Philosophy of Rhetoric by George Campbell

Reflection on the Application of Rhetorical Strategies in Academic and Research Essays

As I reflect on applying rhetorical strategies in my academic and research essays in the MATC program, I would say that George Campbell’s influence on effective communication has impacted my ability to appeal to emotions and reasoning in my technical writing. According to Campbell, effective communication is about more than just transmitting information; it also requires the ability to influence others (Bizzell, 2020).

Understanding the audience’s motivations, demographics, beliefs, values, and emotions is crucial in technical writing. Campbell introduced the concept of “propriety,” the artful use of language in different contexts (Campbell, 2013). Propriety ensures clarity, makes good choices with words, maintains simplicity, and leads the reader through each step. Campbell’s emphasis on the simplicity of diction means that context must be presented eloquently without sacrificing accuracy. Additionally, Campbell believed that clear and understandable language is essential for all audiences, regardless of their level of education.

Before I studied rhetorical theory, I thought communication was simply about getting a message across.  Now, I understand it is about crafting a message that resonates with the audience, one that not only informs but also persuades.  Through figures like George Campbell, rhetorical theory emphasizes the power of emotional and logical appeals.  Understanding the audience and their needs is like customizing a message that speaks directly to them, one that resonates and motivates.

Rhetorical theory has influenced my writing style.  Clarity and accessibility have been a paramount lesson in the MATC program.  Complex jargon may impress some people, but it will only connect some users. Now, I have the tools to be a more effective communicator and can craft messages that reach a more diverse audience, regardless of their background or education level.  It is a powerful skill, and I am excited to see where it takes me.
