Gilbert Austin, Development of Non-Verbal Communication in Rhetoric
This short composition demonstrates my understanding of the role of nonverbal communication in technical writing. While the focus here is rhetoric, the same principles apply.
Gilbert Austin’s work on creating a notation system for rhetorical gestures highlights the importance of considering non-verbal communication in technical documents (Spoel, 1998). Technical documents often benefit from images, diagrams, and other visual aids. These elements can improve a reader’s understanding of the material and serve as a form of non-verbal communication to reinforce the written instructions. Just as Austin’s gesture system provided a “grid” for analyzing body language, well-designed visuals can provide a “grid” for understanding technical information. By carefully considering the use of space, color, and other visual elements, technical writers can understandably communicate complex ideas to a diverse audience.
Learning about Austin’s work has helped me expand my technical writing skills. I now recognize the value of incorporating non-verbal communication strategies into my documents, which helps me create more user-friendly technical documents.
